Vivian Yang is the author of the novels Shanghai Girl, Memoirs of a Eurasian, Shan Hai Gaaru, and the non-fiction Status, Society & Sino-Singaporeans. She was a top winner of The WNYC Leonard Lopate Show Essay Contest and a Literature Fellow of The New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

A China-native, Vivian taught English and journalism at Shanghai International Studies University in her early twenties and studied creative writing at Columbia University where she was a Woolrich Writing Fund Scholar and a Writing Program Scholar. She worked as a broadcaster for China Radio International and CCTV-International, and a contributor of CHINA DAILY and the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong). She has appeared as a cultural commentator on television and cable stations in the U.S., China and Southeast Asia.
