In 1949, George Uhlig saw an urgent safety need: how to prevent load slippage on cable lever ratchet hoists. His idea was to create the interlocking, double-pawl ratchet system to ensure that one pawl always holds the load.

George consulted his best friend and mechanical engineer, Bernard Wallace, who said “I can do that.” And with that, Bernard designed the first fully functional interlocking double pawl mechanism built with aluminum castings. The product, which was known as the LUG-ALL Winch-Hoist , was the first product of its kind to function both as a winch and as a hoist (“winch-hoist”). U.S. Patent No. 2,633,328 was granted to Bernard Wallace for his invention.

The LUG-ALL Company selected Philadelphia for its sales office because its central location offered easy one-day travel to most of The LUG-ALL company’s customers in its East Coast market. The LUG-ALL Company business eventually expanded to the entire country. Not long after setting up business in Philadelphia, Uhlig bought out Wallace’s share.
