Leupold

Past It’s a decidedly American story: one century ago in 1907, a young German immigrant named Fred Leupold set up a one man shop at 5th and Oak Streets in Portland, Oregon, repairing optics for surveying equipment. Leupold & Stevens is still family owned, though our focus has turned from surveying to helping people all across the globe survey their environments with the innovative, high-performance sports optics and accessories. A lot happened in between. Fred Leupold was joined by his brother-in-law, Adam Voelpel. Later, an ingenious and prolific inventor and consulting engineer named John Cyprian Stevens became a partner in the business. The small company survived the First World War and the Great Depression. But it was the Second World War that would change the company forever. Working with the U.S. Army on a riflescope and the Navy on optics for use aboard ships, the engineers at Leupold learned the secrets of waterproofing and durable construction that would completely change the world of sports optics. Present Today, Leupold optics are renowned for their unchallenged ruggedness, absolute waterproof integrity, and their vastly superior optical quality. A century of observation and optical experience has gone into every binocular and scope we produce, and we think the results are well worth the extra effort required to achieve this level of quality. In true American style, the philosophical foundation laid in our early years served as a template for the company as we’ve grown and changed over the decades. In fact, the firm’s founder established the clarity of purpose that we see at Leupold & Stevens today: ”We solemnly promise never to let down on quality, the customer is entitled to a square deal.” – Markus Friedrich “Fred” Leupold

Kent Watersports

In 1981, under new ownership, the KENT brand became a major factor in the Type I kapok commercial vest market and Type II commodity market. About a year later, a small company in Celina, Ohio, with a brand niche in water skis, ropes, and vests, approached KENT and asked them to manufacture their ski vests. This was the beginning of Kent’s quest to be a major player in the water sports, marine, and PFD (personal flotation device) industry. Starting in 2001, the Shareholders of Kent started several corporations that acquired the assets of other popular water sports corporations and their respective brands. Some of these include Connelly, CWB, HO, Hyperlite, O’Brien, Liquid Force, Straight Line and Wakekite, all specializing in a full line of high action recreational water sports products including wakeboards, kneeboards, kiteboards, towable tubes, skis, ropes and life jackets. These products can be found at most specialty shops, pro shops, and big box retailers. In 2009, KENT introduced two other innovative brands to the marketplace under the Absolute Outdoor corporation marketed as Full Throttle and Onyx. Boyt Harness Co.

Boyt Harness Company, the hunting industry standard for gun cases and firearm storage and transport, traces their beginnings to a family owned regional harness shop in turn of the century Iowa. The industrious Boyt brothers founded Walter Boyt Saddery in 1901. The Boyt brother’s burgeoning enterprise primarily manufactured fine driving harness for buggies, however, the Great War in Europe took the company in a direction that would frame it for the next 100 years. The advent of World War I found the company building the first of many firearm accessories such as military pistol holsters for the then new Colt 1911 .45 pistol along with cavalry saddle bags and harness for artillery and transport horses. In 1925, the name was changed from The Walter Boyt Saddlery Company to The Boyt Harness Company and a new generation of Boyt brothers continued the tradition of making harness, saddles, bridles and tack for farmers and stockman across the Midwest. Struggling through the Great Depression and the dust bowl years, Boyt Harness Company developed a reputation for quality and delivery second to none and farmers across the country proudly tacked their draft teams in well oiled Boyt harness and collars each morning but the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor begin another shift to production for the war effort. From 1941 through 1945, The Boyt Harness Company produced millions of pieces of equipment destined for American offensives in both the European and Pacific theaters as tens of thousands of teachers, farmers, office workers and tradesmen were transformed into the largest standing fighting force in the nation’s history. After the war, Boyt shifted production back to saddles and harness, but the mechanization of America had put most of the work horses out to pasture. For the first time, sporting goods became a priority and gun cases, hunting vests and cartridge bags begin to make up the majority of production. The Boyt Five Star canvas case, named for the five award stars that the company had been presented for their production efforts during the war years, was quickly heralded as the premier method of firearm storage of the times, a position that Boyt has maintained for almost 70 years. Building upon Boyt’s dominance in the high end gun case and accessory markets, the company begin to acquire other top sporting brands starting with the acquisition of Bob Allen Sportswear in 1997. Bob Allen Company was started in a parachute shop on the tiny Pacific atoll of Tinian towards the end of World War II. Bob Allen was a young, nationally known, clay target shooter before the war, who later parlayed his aerial gunner instructor duties into a combat assignment in the South Pacific. Bob’s first product design was a long billed cap that helped keep the sun out of bomber crews’ eyes on their long flights to mainland Japan. Trading a ration of wartime Scotch in the parachute shop for each one of his prized hats, the Bob Allen Company was born. After the war, the hats found favor with shooters and soon Bob was selling hats, shooting vests, pouches and bags from the trunk of his car as he traveled the shooting circuit. Opening the first retail store on the grounds of the Grand American Trapshoot, designing the first shooting vest, and the first non-military camouflage pattern were just a few of Bob Allen’s “firsts”. Sadly, Bob was killed in a car accident in November of 2004, but his legacy still lives on through the brand he started almost 70 years ago. Acquisitions since that time have included the Rattler’s and Bug Out brands of protective clothing for the outdoorsman, Secure Vault, personal security and hand gun storage systems, and the Mud River Dog Products.Mud River Dog Products builds innovative and high-quality accessories for dog training and the hunting world. From puppies to full grown dogs, Mud River has beds, bowls, collars, and everything in between to keep your dog happy, healthy, and hunting. Mud River will also be introducing a new line of clothing and travel gear in the upcoming year. The core Boyt brand has continued to expand as well, entering the injection molded travel case market in 2009 with the introduction of the Boyt H-Case series. Since 1901, Boyt has worked hard to provide rugged and dependable equipment, accessories and clothing for all hunting and shooting enthusiasts. All of our products are carefully crafted with durable materials to withstand even the most challenging conditions for years of enjoyment. It is not easy setting the standard for quality, but it is a role that they have grown accustomed to after more than 100 years in the business.

Seal Skinz

While we’ve been involved with leading, innovative technologies for many years, it was a little over thirty years ago when one of our co-workers discovered some fascinating information that gave us our initial thoughts on performance waterproof socks. While carrying out a research project on original breathable waterproof technologies, our leading technologist came across details from one of the world’s most innovative pioneers, John Logie Baird, the inventor of television. John Logie Baird suffered from very poor circulation resulting in his extremities getting incredibly cold in the winter months. This limited his time spent in the outdoors to the warmer months. Being a Scotsman, John Logie Baird’s time in the beautiful Scottish highlands was severely restricted. Baird was soon at work developing a two layered sock, the outer and inner of which were made from cotton, with the inner being impregnated with borax*. The borax ensured moisture, generated from the foot, was quickly wicked away, keeping the feet warm, dry and comfortable. Like JLB our co-worker also suffered from poor circulation and could readily see the freedom Baird’s simple innovative idea brought him in terms of getting out into the hills, irrelevant of the season. Like any outdoor enthusiast our colleague wanted to be first on the hill and last back. Soon our lab was a hive of activity. Because of our leading technologies and manufacturing processes, we were able to take JLB’s basic concept and develop it into what it is today, cutting edge products providing the user with the very best comfort and performance with a very long life expectancy.
