BEKA associates Ltd. is a privately owned, independent British company dedicated to the continuous development of display instrumentation predominantly for use in hazardous areas.

Company Profile Request update info.

BEKA associates is an independent British company committed to the design and manufacture of cost effective display instrumentation, mainly for use in hazardous areas.

In addition to our well known loop powered 4/20mA indicators which are now fourth generation models, we can supply a wide range of rate totalisers, fieldbus and data indicators, plus annunciators such as flashing beacons, sounders and panel lamps. All have been designed by BEKA engineers, are manufactured in our modern Hitchin factory and have international hazardous area certifications allowing them to be used worldwide.

We aim to provide the most comprehensive range of hazardous area display products backed by comprehensive product support. Whether you are extending a simple panel, or specifying the instrumentation for a large project.

BEKA was founded in early 1983 by Chris and Jenny Burkitt to provide a design and consultancy service for intrinsically safe products. Initially operating from a single room in their North Hertfordshire village home, BEKA was incorporated as a limited company in September 1984. When the company outgrew its domestic premises in 1987 an ancient Coach House was rented in the nearby market town of Hitchin.

The first BEKA product, an intrinsically safe loop powered indicator with a unique low voltage drop and simple apparatus terminals, was launched in 1984, gradually followed by other models and international certifications.

Alec Robshaw joined the company in 1989. Alec was appointed sales director in 1992 and toured the world promoting the company until May 2009, when he retired to enjoy a more relaxed life renovating derelict farm buildings in the Dordogne.

Tilehouse Street, HitchinTilehouse Street, Hitchin
In 1993 BEKA purchased the Midland Bank building in Hitchin, complete with strongroom – alas empty. The building, which is in a conservation area close to Hitchin Priory and historic Tilehouse Street, was gradually refurbished and now provides a custom home for more than 40 sales, production and design staff.

Ben Brough was appointed managing director in 2001 and has been responsible for introducing new ranges of instrumentation and keeping BEKA at the forefront of electronic hazardous area technology.

In 2002 Andrew Hicks joined the company as principal engineer and successfully managed the design department until his untimely death in May 2013 at the tragically early age of 49. Andrew’s vast electronic design experience and attention to detail significantly contributed to our success during these years.

Dave Turner assumed responsibility for BEKA export sales in 2005 and in 2009 Dave was appointed sales director to continue our tradition of friendly worldwide support. More than half of our output is now exported mainly via overseas agents who are regularly visited and trained so that they are able to effectively support BEKA products in their area.

In June 2013 Emma Titmuss was elected financial director and she is also responsible for human resources and recruiting.

BEKA remains a totally independent company maintaining its original objectives to provide reliable, cost effective instrumentation quickly. Professional engineers manage the company and a relatively large design department continues to develop new state-of-the-art products.

We encourage all BEKA folk to pursue further education and many have been awarded an HNC or HND. Work experience places are offered to local schools and we are always keen to meet and help young people who are considering a career in the electronic instrument industry.
